Plaid for fall is as about as revolutionary as florals for spring, but it’s a fall staple for a reason. It’s timeless, cozy, and not to mention an American classic. So today I’m sharing a few simple ways to wear plaid this fall season.
The classic top — it’s a classic for a reason, right? Button ups can be tricky for me, but I’ve found that looser cuts work the better. Rails is one of my favorite brands for plaid tops because the cut just works for me. It’s loose where it needs to be, but still fits nicely in the shoulders. Obviously fit matters with all clothing, but I think finding a plaid top that fits you is a must. You don’t want to be swimming in that pattern when the top is too big.
Tops with a twist – I’ve got a few takes on this for you. First, look for a a style that’s not a button up. I snagged this off the shoulder blouse from Anthro last fall and loved the silhouette. Another idea, start with your classic style and add something to elevate it. Here I added a faux fur shrug to add texture and a bit of glam. Popovers and tunics are other fun alternatives too!
Blazer – With menswear being all the rage this season, I highly recommend adding a menswear inspired plaid blazer. This one from Zara is from 2010 and I’m so glad I held on to it. I’ll definitely be styling this one all season long.
Scarves – If you’re looking to wear plaid without it being center piece of your outfit, scarves are the way to go. Blanket scarves are my favorite because the styling options are seemingly endless.
